Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is unfortunate to read about people being forcibly evicted from their homes in a city where a landlord finds it difficult to get even a tenant to leave. Clearing Mumbai's slums to favour mill owners and expand the airport is outrageous. If slums indeed pose a challenge to the beautification of the city, they can be upgraded. Do not deprive people their shelter.
Vivek Beri,
Sir, After 1950, not a single major public hospital has been constructed in Mumbai. As for the suburban railways, which carry almost 8 lakh passengers a day, the less said the better. People have actually given up any hope of seeing any improvement in Mumbai, let alone dreaming of seeing a Shanghai or a Singapore.
S. Subramanyan,
Sir, It is not just Mumbai. Look at way the Gujarat Government is holding on despite strong protests and satyagraha against the Sardar Sarovar Dam project which, when it fructifies, is going to submerge hundreds of villages and displace thousands. The latest is the proposed Sethusamudram Project, which will disturb marine life and fisherfolk will be rendered jobless. All in the name of development.
Chandni Tyagi,
