BANGALORE, FEB. 21. Karnataka State Police and Central Excise entered the quarterfinal of the K. M. Cariappa Memorial State-level Hockey Championship, scoring contrasting wins ere on Monday. Karnataka State Police coasted to a 3-1 victory over SAI after the teams had tied at 1-1 at half-time. Mudgar struck for KSP in the eighth minute and SAI levelled through Ramachandra in the 30th minute. In the second session, KSP, which had the better of exchanges, forged ahead with Sundar converting a penalty stroke that was awarded after the rival defender's physical tackle. Lakshman Rao then scored in the 52nd minute to seal KSP's facile win. Central Excise, down by a goal in the first half, rallied to beat Southern Railway 3-2 in another tie. Diwakar put Southern Railway ahead a minute before the break. But, after resumption, Central Excise struck quick blows through Hari Prasad (38th minute), Anup Antony (42nd) and Marthoma (56th). Arumugan reduced the margin for the Southern Railway in the 58th minute Our Special Correspondent.
