Eighteen persons, including three women, were killed and 40 were injured when a maxi-cab and a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus were involved in a collision near Rudrakshipura Gate, about seven km from Maddur, on the Mysore-Bangalore State Highway today.
The police said the maxi-cab, which was carrying about 50 passengers, was on its way to Channapatna and the bus was bound for Mysore. Eight persons died on the spot while seven persons died on their way to hospital. Three died at the Mandya District Hospital.
The Superintendent of Police, Mandya district, R. Hitendra, told The Hindu that the toll could go up as the condition of six persons, including the driver of the maxi-cab, was serious. "The maxi-cab driver has lost his legs," he said.
All the dead were passengers of the maxi-cab.
