Garbage ruining Hogenakkal's beauty

By S. Prasad

Dumping of garbage has affected the tourism potential at Hogenakkal.

DHARMAPURI, FEB. 21. The Tourism potential of Dharmapuri district, which has one of the famous sight-seeing attractions in the State, Hogenakkal, remains untapped. The residents are sore over the increased degradation of the spot, which attracts tourists from all over the State and neighbouring Karnataka. The ecological balance is threatened by indiscriminate dumping of plastic and sewage waste into the falls. Barring the Government-run Tamil Nadu Hotel, none of the hotels here has adhered to the pollution control norms.

While the Tamil Nadu Hotel has got its own septic tank, other hotels and commercial establishments let sewage into the falls. With the scope of every hotel setting up a treatment plant remote because of the exorbitant cost involved, it was decided to establish a common treatment plant.Sources in the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board said a proposal was mooted to establish a common sewage treatment plant long ago, but none of the hotels applied for licence.

The ban on use of plastics has not been enforced and poor public awareness contributed to the abysmal conditions. Tourists dump food packets all over the place.

The District Collector, Ashish Vachhani, said a comprehensive solid waste disposal management plan was mooted and self-help groups would be engaged for collection and disposal of garbage. They would also be involved in cleaning up riverbanks. The sale of fish would be streamlined, with provision of garbage disposal systems, he said.
