Yediyurappa favours direct election for Prime Minister's post

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, FEB. 21. B.S. Yediyurappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, has called for direct election to the posts of Prime Minister and Chief Minister.

Addressing a gathering on the fifth day of `Taralabalu Hunnime-2005,' a nine-day socio-cultural and religious festival here on Sunday, Mr. Yediyurappa said only this will bring in political stability.

He endorsed the idea of recalling "non-performing" people's representatives. "People are not happy with the system. If a people's representative turns out to be a non-performer, there is no meaning in allowing him to continue," he said.

Elections

"It is only 10 months since the elections took place, but some leaders of the ruling coalition are talking of another election just to satisfy their egos," he charged.

Naxalism has become the bane of democracy. Some naxalite leaders have insulted the democratic set-up by saying they will answer the Government through the gun.

Bhagirathi Marulasiddana Gowda, Minister for Women and Child Development, lauded the efforts of Taralabalu Mutt to society.

S.H. Chandramouli, public prosecutor, took exception to the telecast of crime-based serials on television.

"Crime is being sensationalised and some times blown out of proportion by the media. This is pushing society towards disaster," he said.

Itagi Eranna, poet, talked on `Vachanas' and Banu Mushtak on `Sufi and Shivasharana.'

Materialism

Shivamurthy Shivacharya Swamiji, pontiff of Taralabalu Mutt, spoke against the pursuit of materialistic goals.

In pursuit of such goals people are forgetting the basic essence of life, he said.

Eshwarananda Puri of Kaginele Mahasamsthana, Hosadurga, asked the people to eschew politics.

Siddalinga Swamiji, junior seer of Siddaganga Mutt, spoke.

Nadoja Award winner and folk artiste, Siriyajji; K. Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University; and A. Nagaraj, manager of Taralabalu institutions; were felicitated.
