HYDERABAD, FEB. 21. The Assembly was adjourned for a break shortly after it got down to business on Monday amidst an uproar by the CPI (M) and TDP members demanding a discussion on withering of crop and migration of labour in the State due to drought conditions. The CPI(M) moved an adjournment motion to discuss the problem which was disallowed by the Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy. As their repeated pleas went in vain, the CPI(M) members -- Tammineni Veerabhadram and Ranga Reddy -- barged into the well of the House to show the dried sheaves of a crop to the Speaker. The party Floor Leader, N. Narasimhaiah, urged the Speaker to make the Government issue a statement on the steps taken to save the standing crop and check migration of labour. The Speaker as well as the Finance and Legislative Affairs Minister, K. Rosaiah, contended that there was no practice where a Government issued a statement on a motion which was disallowed. It would lead to a new precedent in legislative affairs.
TDP joins chorus
The TDP joined the chorus by the CPI (M) and CPI which gave a separate adjournment motion demanding resumption of talks by the Government with the Maoists. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, went to the support of the Leftists as he argued that the burning issues could not be sidelined due to taking up of the routine agenda. When Mr. Naidu wanted to know why water was not released to Nagarjunsagar ayacut inspite of good storage in the reservoir, the Speaker adjourned the House. Tempers cooled down when the House reassembled. Mr. Naidu initially took up the issue of lack of patronage for Telugu on the occasion of "matru bhasha dinotsavam' before launching the attack on the Government during his speech on motion of thanks to the Governor's address.
