By Our Staff Reporter

GURUVAYUR, FEB. 21. `Krishna,' the 19-year-old elephant offered by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, to the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple in 2001, won the first place in the annual `Aanayottam' (elephant race) held at the temple this afternoon.

In all, 43 elephants took part in the `Aanayottam.' Of them, only seven were permitted to compete in the race. `Krishna' won the first place beating the elephant `Kannan' which had come first during the last two years. This was the first time that `Krishna' took part in the full race. In the previous years, it was permitted to join the `slow racers' in the rear-line. `Krishna' got the opportunity to compete in the race this time `Gopikrishnan', which had won the first place seven times in the race, was in musth.
