BIJAPUR, FEB. 21. The President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), B. Janardhana Poojary, today charged that the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda is attempting to create distrust among Congressmen. Addressing a meeting of party workers in connection with the coming gram panchayat elections, he lambasted Mr. Gowda for his reported statement that the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, may ask the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to step down. Seeing a conspiracy behind the statement, Mr. Poojary said Congressmen will not fall prey to the ploy by the Janata Dal (S) leader. Mr. Gowda is also trying to send a message that he was instrumental in making Mr. Singh the Chief Minister and is under his (Mr. Gowda's) control, which is far from true. It is Ms. Gandhi who made Mr. Singh the Chief Minister. Mr. Gowda should realise that "Mr. Singh is not in his pocket," the KPCC chief said amid applause. Referring to the gram panchayat elections, Mr. Poojary directed the party leaders to help party workers win the elections. Some party workers wanted to air their opinions, but Mr. Poojary did not allow them to do so saying that they can share their grievances with him personally. He will give a patient hearing to them, he said. The KPCC general secretaries Prakash Rathod and Ramachandrappa; the AICC member and MLA, M.B. Patil; the President of District Congress Committee, B.R. Patil Anjutagi; the former Ministers B.S. Patil Sasanur and B.S. Patil Managuli; the former legislators Sharanappa Sunagar, Raju Algur, B.G. Patil Halasangi and S.A. Jiddi; the President of the district unit of the Youth Congress, Jyothiram Pawar; and zilla and taluk panchayat members were present.
