Bellary police arrest suspected naxalite

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, FEB. 21. Bellary police arrested an alleged naxalite, Vishwanath, alias Ganesh, alias Rajendra Babu, in the early hours of today. He is wanted in several cases in Bellary and Koppal and also in the neighbouring districts of Andhra Pradesh, according to Pankaj Kumar Thakur, Superintendent of Police.

Mr. Thakur said Vishwanath is a leader of the Sanketam Dalam, a naxalite group based in Andhra Pradesh.

In March 2000, the Bellary police raided a house, arrested four persons and seized four revolvers. Vishwanath was among the four persons who managed to escape then, Mr. Thakur said.

Based on a tip-off that Vishwanath was coming on a two-wheeler, the Inspectors M.R. Reddy and Ravindra Shirur and their staff intercepted him on the road leading from Anantapur and arrested him.

Verification of records and interrogation has revealed that Vishwanath is wanted in at least ten cases of murder, extortion, issuing threats and causing loss of public property, including a case of extorting Rs. 5 lakhs from the manager of N.K. Steels here.

Mr. Thakur has commended the efforts of the police in apprehending him.
