UDUPI, FEB. 21. As many as 237 persons have been elected unopposed for the gram panchayat elections in Udupi district, according to the Election Cell at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday. Three gram panchayats in Kundapur taluk will witness no elections as the candidates for all seats have been elected unopposed. They are Shankaranarayana Gram Panchayat (18 seats), Kedoor Gram Panchayat (10 seats) and Kerady Gram Panchayat (13 seats). The taluk-wise break-up figure of the 237 candidates elected unopposed is: Udupi (85), Kundapur (134), and Karkala (18). There will be elections in 140 gram panchayats in the district. There are 4,862 candidates in the fray for 2,086 seats of 140 gram panchayats. Of the 4,862 persons in the fray in the district, 1,972 are women. Elections to the 2,086 gram panchayat seats will be held on February 27.
