CHENNAI, FEB. 21. The role of the National Service Scheme volunteers during tsunami relief and the Kumbakonam fire tragedy was commended by the State Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Inbathamilan. Presiding over a State-level advisory committee meeting organised here, Mr. Inbathtamilan lauded the Nagapattinam Collector, J. Radhakrishnan's dynamism in both the Kumbakonam tragedy and the tsunami calamity. "It all goes back to the days when he was in college and an NSS volunteer. That is when he learned how to serve." He urged that only committed students join the NSS, as there were many cases of students using NSS "as an excuse to cut classes." He urged colleges to conduct NSS activities after class hours or on holidays. The Minister said volunteers could disseminate information about new government schemes to people in villages. He told presspersons that mementoes would be presented to volunteers who participated in tsunami relief activities and cash prize to the 25 best NSS coordinators. M.A. Muthuveeraganapathy, Director of Collegiate Education, listed the activities of NSS following directives of a State-level meeting held in 2002. He said volunteers had arranged camps to promote social unity, improve the environment and providing education to Adi Dravida girls who dropped out. A fee of Rs.10 was collected from students from 2003-2004 for forming a corpus fund.
