Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, FEB. 21. The Tiruchi airport has recorded a healthy growth rate of 38.4 per cent in passenger traffic and 121 per cent in cargo movement last year, the Airport Director, S. Sreekumar, said. The open-air policy, improvement in tourism sector, fare reduction and introduction of new services contributed to an overall increase in air passenger traffic in the country. The country had registered an increase of 23.5 per cent of passenger traffic and 21.97 per cent of cargo movement between April and October last year. During the same period, the Tiruchi airport also recorded a substantial increase in passenger and cargo movement, he said, speaking at the National Productivity Week celebration at the airport here yesterday.
National Productivity Week celebration
Observing a week for national productivity was a means to an impetus for talents in the service sector, he said, adding that the civil aviation sector was progressing fast with about six to seven per cent rise in passengers worldwide. In the next five years, India would require at least 200 additional aircrafts, involving an expenditure of Rs.500 to 1000 crores. Lack of motivation prevented latent talents in the service sectors to come up with innovative ideas. Innovative ideas coming from the micro and macro levels must be encouraged, he said. Speaking on the occasion, G.R.K. Raju, Chief Workshops Manager, Golden Rock, stressed the need for innovation and implementation of new ideas in the service sector so as to acquire a competitive edge.
Awards given
Mr. Raju gave away the Innovation Award to P. Paneerselvam, Senior Superintendent Engineer (Civil), for his innovation of the localised antenna that gave centreline alignment when the aircraft is launched. Prizes were also given to T. Ramesh Kumar and Mahadevan for coming first in the essay competition organised as part of the productivity week. Waheeda Begum and Dhanapal won the second prize. Appreciation awards were given to R. Periyasamy, S. Vasudevan, N. Balakrishnan, P. Wilson and Benjamin for their timely assistance to passengers during emergencies.
