NEW DELHI, FEB. 21. Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University today went on a relay hunger strike demanding suspension of the Urdu professor, Naseer Ahmad Khan, who they claim has been victimising them by de-evaluating them and purposely giving lower grades to those who questioned his `verdict'. Coming as it does almost a year after a special four member enquiry committee was set up to look into the complaints against Prof.Khan recommended a re-evaluation of the grades given by him, students of the Centre for Indian languages (CIL) say they are not ready to be assessed by him. To begin with, six students went on a hunger strike on Monday. "This kind of incident has been unprecedented in the University. Nearly 50 per cent of the students from the Centre have complaints against him as most of them have had to face his wrath. Action against him has been long pending and we are demanding speedy action. What we want is punishment in a time bound manner,'' said the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) joint secretary, Shona Mitra. While pointing out that the report of the reconstituted re-evaluation committee had only vindicated student claims of his being autocratic and anti-student, the JNUSU in a statement issued today said that "he victimised us by awarding intentionally low grades. When we demanded a re-evaluation, unbrazenly abusing his power of chairmanship of the CIL he further slashed our grades and threatened us of dire consequences if we continued his unjust and arbitrary verdict''.
