Cocoon prices look up

COIMBATORE, FEB. 22. The prices for white cocoon (CSR Hybrid variety) have been looking up at the regulated cocoon market here during the last one week. Prices have shot up by nearly Rs. 40 a kg.

The Sericulture Department officials said that about a couple of days ago the price had gone up to Rs. 167 a kg from Rs. 120 a month ago.

Usually white cocoon was reared between July and February and the arrival of this variety ended by the beginning of February. However, this year arrivals had been continuing even this month and the price was also going up.

They said that the cocoon market here received 60 to 70 lots (each 50 to 60 kg) a day from 70 farmers (on an average). About a month ago, just ten farmers or even less brought white cocoon and now equal quantity of white and yellow cocoon were received at the market.

"More farmers have started understanding that the quality of the hybrid variety is better," the officials said. Further, the general silk consumption was also up now. Hence, prices were expected to remain high for at least some more time.

The area under mulberry cultivation had also gone up in the district this year, especially in Udumalpet area. The area under cultivation had gone up by about 200 acres in the district during this financial year, they said.
