Dealing with naxalism

Sir, — The argument that the naxal challenge should not be treated as a law and order problem alone ("Dealing with naxalism," Feb. 17) is sound. But to say that tribal areas and pockets provide a fertile ground for naxalites is incorrect.

Nothing will be a greater mistake than to treat naxalism as a local phenomenon. It has a national dimension and the socio-economic inequalities of the people of the country as a whole are its driving force. The solution does not lie in suppressing the movement or in blaming governments. It lies in removing the contradictions in our social and economic life.

Devarapalli Sreeramulu,
Kakinada, A.P.
