All-round show by Sabanayakan

KOLKATA, FEB. 22. An all-round show by S. Sabanayakan of The Hindu, Kolkata helped East Zone beat South Zone by seven wickets in the opening match of the all-India J. K. Bose inter-zonal cricket tournament at the Eden Gardens here on Tuesday.

As East decided to field first on winning the toss, Sabanayakan took three for 12 and Abhishek Sengupta (Aajkal) four for 24 to bowl South out for 129 in 29.1 overs. P. Satish Kumar of The Hindu, Chennai anchored the South innings with a patient 31.

Replying for East, Sabanayakan, named the LG Man-of-the-Match, scored an unbeaten 35 hitting six 4s to pull East out of a difficult situation with an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 73 runs with Rakesh Dubey (24 not out) of PTI, Kolkata.

In another round robin league match between West Zone and North Zone, Sanjeev Samyal of the Mid-Day put up a spectacular all-round performance to power West Zone to a nail-biting 11-run victory over North Zone. Man-of-the-Match Samyal cracked an unbeaten 99, laced with four 6s and six 4s, to provide the platform for West to make 241 for five in 30 overs. North, riding on Dharmendra Tripathy's unbeaten innings knock of 44, made a valiant attempt but was restricted to 230 for nine. Samyal had a four-wicket haul, the highest for West.

West plays East tomorrow at the Eden Gardens, while North takes on South at the Customs ground.

CSJC in final

The Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club (CSJC) will meet Indore Sports Writers' Association in the table tennis final of the A. C. Bali Memorial Trophy. CSJC beat Sports Journalists' Association of Mumbai 3-2 in the semifinal with the Indore team getting the better of Tamil Nadu Sports Journalists' Association (TNSJA) 3-1 in the other semifinal. The final will be played on Friday.

Brief scores: South Zone 129 all out in 29.1 overs (P. Satish Kumar 31, Abhishek Sengupta four for 24, S. Sabanayakan three for 12) lost to East Zone 130 for three in 20.4 overs (Sabanayakan 35 not out).

West Zone 241 for five in 30 overs (Rahul Dixit 66, Sanjeev Samyal 99 not out, Dharmendra Tripathy three for 33) bt North Zone 230 for nine in 30 overs (Dharmendra Tripathy 44 not out, Shivram Roy 28, Rakesh Thapliyal 27, Sanjeev Samyal four for 55).
