Ex-gratia for avalanche victims

NEW DELHI, FEB. 22. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has expressed sorrow over the death of more than a hundred people in the snowstorm in Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Singh has approved an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 50,000 each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the avalanches.

Sonia to visit

The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, is visiting Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow for a first-hand assessment of the damage caused due to avalanches and also interact with those affected by the natural calamity.

Ms. Sonia will reach Srinagar and plans to visit, Jammu, Poonch and Anantnag, party sources said. She would also make an aerial survey of the areas hit by avalanches.

The Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee and the AICC general secretary, Ambika Soni, in charge of party affairs of the State, would accompany Ms. Gandhi.
