Fresh avalanches likely in three States
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
FEB 22.
Weathermen have warned of another spell of snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal from Friday and consequently a fresh round of avalanches in these States over the weekend.
According to meteorologists at the India Meteorology Department and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, the new spell of snowfall is likely, as a western disturbance has developed over Pakistan and is likely to move over to the northern parts of India by Thursday evening.
The snowfall, they said, may not be as intense as had happened last week and it may also not last long. It could be for about two days only. But since large amounts of snow had already piled up over the mountains, the incremental snowfall could trigger avalanches.
Among the three States, snowfall is likely to be most in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal. The fresh western disturbance would also mean more rains in north-west Rajasthan and northern Punjab.
