Hat-trick by Chinappa

BANGALORE, FEB. 22. M.D. Chinappa scored a hat-trick as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited beat Indian Overseas Bank 4-2 to enter the quarterfinals of the Field Marshal Cariappa memorial hockey tournament at the KSHA stadium here on Tuesday.

IOB opened the scoring in the 11th minute off a penalty corner converted by Gopinath but HAL reversed the tide after that. K.P Roy scored HAL's first goal off a penalty corner in the 13th minute. Then Chinappa took over, scoring in the 28th, 40th and 48th minutes. Arun Kumar reduced the margin for IOB in the 55th minute. HAL missed scoring off a penalty stroke when P.T. Aiyappa's scoop was blocked by IOB goalkeeper Ilyas.

In the second match, Coorg XI beat State Juniors 2-1 to make it to the quarterfinals. A.K Kavin scored the first goal in the 21st minute but Samuel Niranjan equalised ten minutes later. Jethan Kalappa scored the match winner in the 46th.

The quarterfinalists are Central Excise and Southern Railway from Pool A, HAL and PCTC from Pool B, KSP and SAI from Pool C and Coorg XI and ITI from Pool D.

In Wednesday's matches, Central Excise plays Sports Authority of India and Southern Railway clashes with Karnataka State Police.
