`Not hijacking doctors'

Deep Ghatak, Manager-Corporate Communications, of Max India Ltd, writes:

The report, "Corporate hospitals `hijacking' doctors" (The Hindu, February 10) by Bindu Shajan Perappadan, conjures baseless allegations against Max Healthcare, which are both inaccurate and seem motivated.

Max Healthcare has "partnered" the Devki Devi Foundation and Balaji Trust to create state-of-the-art, world-class hospitals. These hospitals bear testimony to the highest standards of medical and service excellence and comprehensive patient care. These hospitals were neither ready nor operational when Max Healthcare entered into agreements with the two trusts. We have clearly not "taken over" any hospital but have instead built and completed them at substantial cost from our funds.

Secondly, both hospitals are accessible to all classes of society and fulfil all requirements of free beds and consultations for poor patients.

Thirdly, we have not "hijacked" any doctor from any charitable hospital. All our doctors mentioned in the report -- Dr. Ashok Seth, Dr. S. K. S. Marya, Dr. Praveen Chandra and Dr. S. K. Mittal -- have either come from private hospitals or retired from government hospitals and joined us of their own free will. They are accessible to all patients from anywhere in India and abroad.
