KATHMANDU, FEB. 22. Security forces have killed 12 Maoists in eastern Nepal, even as rebels set off bombs in several schools and government offices which functioned defying their strike call to protest the seizure of power by King Gyanendra on February 1. A dozen Maoists were killed in a retaliatory operation launched by the security forces at Dakaha village of Sindhuli district, 200 km south-east of Kathmandu yesterday, security sources said. The security forces retaliated after the rebels opened fire on them during a regular patrol in the area, they said. However, only one rebel's dead body was recovered from the area, the sources said adding other bodies were carried away by the Maoists. There was no casualty on the side of the security forces, an army official said. On the tenth day of their blockade call, Maoists exploded bombs at several places and tightened the economic blockade. A string of bomb blasts hit schools and colleges in Nepalgunj, about 500 km west of Kathmandu, injuring at least three persons. The Home Minister, Dan Bahadur Shahi, said he hoped the rebels would come to the negotiating table for ending years of bloodshed. PTI
