Court directive to AICTE

HYDERABAD: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has been restrained by the High Court from issuing letter of Approval (LOA) to the proposed 17 new engineering colleges in the State. These interim orders were issued by Justice G. Raghu Ram while dealing with the writ petition filed by Self Financing Rural Engineering Colleges Managements Association. The writ petitioner challenged the action of the AICTE in issuing Letter of Intent (LOI) to 17 new colleges in the State.

GCC centres in all districts urged

HYDERABAD: The CPI (M) State committee on Tuesday urged the Government to open Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) purchase centres in all districts and ensure remunerative price for the tribal produce.

In a representation submitted to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the party secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, wanted the Government to ensure that tamarind was purchased at Rs.10 as announced by the GCC. He suggested that an additional fund of Rs.2 crores be sanctioned for each district and steps taken to check the role of middlemen at tribal shandies.

Aided college lecturers' threat

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Aided Degree College Lecturers' Association has decided to boycott the annual examinations as part of its agitation to protest against the Government's failure to issue orders on the agreed demands.

M. Yadagiri, general secretary, in a statement here on Tuesday warned that the agitation would be intensified if the Government fails to concede the demands.

The demands include exemption from passing national/State eligibility test, payment of UGC scale, regularisation/absorption of part-time/temporary lecturers with five academic years of service and payment of UGC arrears.

Infant with heart ailment dies

CUDDAPAH: An infant suffering from a congenital cardiac ailment, Siddhambi, died at Balaiahpalle village in Kasinayana mandal on Tuesday.

The infant's father, Nagendla Siddhaiah, got her examined at a screening camp in Cuddapah three months ago and she was scheduled to undergo surgery at Apollo Hospital in March.

Murder accused ends life

CUDDAPAH: A woman, Sunitha (25), who faced charges of killing her husband at Pagidalapalle in Kodur mandal on January 29, ended her life by consuming acid.

Sunitha, who was taken to hospital at Rayavellore in a serious condition, died while undergoing treatment on Tuesday, according to the police. Sunitha, who got married to Vigrahala Sudhakar two years ago, allegedly killed him owing to differences.

APPSC exam hall-tickets

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission on Tuesday informed the candidates appearing for the written examination for recruitment of forest range officers that they could contact its office on February 23 and 24 for getting duplicate hall-tickets.

A press release issued by the commission said the candidates could also get the duplicate hall-tickets from eSeva centres in the twin cities only from February 23 onwards. They could download them from the APPSC website. The examination will be held only in Hyderabad from February 26.

Fake currency racket busted

VIZIANAGARAM: A fake currency racket was busted with the arrest of four persons on Tuesday. Following a call received on crime stopper, the quick action team, led by the Sub-Inspector, M. Appa Rao, laid in wait at the railway station here and apprehended four persons -- P. Sridhar and T. Ajaya Krishna (both from Kharagpur in West Bengal) and M. Rajesh and T. Navi (both from Bhimili) -- while exchanging blackened bundle of notes, according to the Superintendent of Police, Swati Lakra.

The gang lure people by keeping original notes, blackened with iodine solution, at the top and bottom of a bundle and offer double the money for real currency. The gang would tell its prey that the blackened notes, once dipped in water, turn into original notes and could be exchanged anywhere, according to the SP.

Girl charred to death

Sangareddy: Seven-year-old Chandrakala, daughter of Pusala Narsimhulu, was charred to death on Monday night at Govindarajpalli of Hatnur mandal when two houses of Mohammed Ismail and Narsimhulu caught fire. While all members of the neighbouring houses escaped unhurt, the girl, who was sleeping, caught in fire.

Landmines unearthed

NALGONDA: A team of special police unearthed three landmines at Bugga thanda in the naxal-dominated Chandampet mandal last night.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Harish K. Gupta, the Krishnapatti dalam planted the mines to blast the RTC bus that was carrying police personnel to the remote parts of the mandal.

The police unearthed the three mines hours after finding a landmine at circle thanda following the arrest of a naxalite, Sriramulu, in the same mandal.

Huge haul of ganja

KARIMNAGAR: In a major haul, the Peddapalli police seized ganja worth Rs. 10 lakhs while it was being transported in two vehicles and arrested four persons on Tuesday.

The police also seized two vehicles. The arrested were: Sanjay (25) and Praveen (19) of Amaravathi in Maharashtra and P. Rajesh (22) and B. Prabhakar (19) of Warangal district.

Coal workers seek hike in wages

HYDERABAD: The Singareni Collieries Employees' Union on Tuesday sought intervention of the Government in solving the problems of workers.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, by N.

Narasimhaiah and T. Veerabhadraam, MLAs, the union urged the Government to pass a resolution in the Assembly seeking seventh wage agreement for coalminers.

Members of the union took out a rally from Ramnagar Crossroads to Sundarayya Park which culminated in a public meeting.

Worker dies in mishap

Patancheru: Satish Reddy (20), a worker at the Bhanoor-based Vijetha Alloys Limited was seriously injured when the sand filtering unit fell on him on Tuesday. Later, he died at hospital while undergoing treatment.

Submission of EAMCET forms

HYDERABAD: Applications for EAMCET 2005 can be submitted at all the regional centres and at the convenor's office located in the SIT building on the Kukatpally campus of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University on February 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The last date for submission of the application forms without late fee is March 3, according to an official release.

Cuddapah records 41.3 degree C

Hyderabad: Cuddapah remained hot for the second day on Tuesday recording the day temperature of 41.3 degree Celsius.

The minimum temperature rose at many places in Telangana and Rayalaseema and at one or two places in coastal Andhra. The lowest night temperature was reported by Medak at 17 degree Celsius. Mainly dry weather likely in the State on Wednesday.

NELLORE: The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, has handed over cheques of Rs. 50,000 to each of the five affected persons, who were allegedly manhandled by landlords in Pudiparthi village of Venkatachalasatram mandal recently. The incident occurred when landlords refused to handover land, which originally belonged to local girijans. In the resultant violence, four persons received serious injuries. Financial assistance however was made available for five persons.

NELLORE: Workers affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), staged a dharna in front of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns at Kakutur on the outskirts of Nellore town on Tuesday demanding gate passes. They sought immediate intervention of district authorities to ensure speedy justice.

KURNOOL: In connection with the National Science Day, SCERT, Hyderabad, will hold elocution competition for students of 7th and 8th standards on `Role of science in eliminating superstitions,' at DIET, Tandrapadu, on the outskirts on February 24, according to a press note. Students, accompanied by a teacher, can report at the DIET at 10 a.m.

Nayibrahmins'

plea for aid

KURNOOL: The chairman of Andhra Pradesh Nayibrahmin Federation, G. Sekhar Babu, has said that the federation has sought an assistance of Rs. 2 crores from the Government to support the activities of the barber community. Addressing a meeting here on Tuesday, he urged the Government to supply power to barber shops at subsidised rates and allot shops in Government complexes. He called upon Nayibrahmins to form into societies to receive help from the federation at the State-level. The district president, V.V. Ramana Murthy, presided.
