TUTICORIN, FEB. 22. In an attempt to protect the coastal areas from tsunamis and cyclones, the office of the District Forest Officer (DFO) here has chalked out plans to expand plantation covers along the Tuticorin coast. The DFO, V.Thirunavukarasu, told The Hindu today that a proposal to plant casuarina saplings over 500 hectares along the 90-km coastal stretch had been submitted to the head office of the Forest Department in Chennai recently and the work would begin soon. ``This would be in addition to the 90 hectares of casuarina plantations in the district.'' Mr. Thirunavukarasu said, ``we have opted for casuarina saplings, as they grow quicker than mangroves. And, mangroves are grown only under certain specific conditions.'' By enhancing the plantations, the impact of natural calamites such as tsunamis would be minimised and thereby loss of lives could be averted to a great extent. There are plans to bring in the mangrove plantations in `non-notified' areas under the ambit of the reserve forest notification.
