NEW DELHI, FEB. 22. Protesting that their nationality was being questioned without reason, Zulafaiar Ali Rahat, and his family -- reportedly residents of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir -- yesterday threatened a fast unto death unless the issue of nationality was resolved. Demonstrating at Jantar Mantar here today, Rahat and his family alleged victimisation from government agencies and other residents of their area. According to Rahat -- whose nomination papers were rejected by the returning officer during the last general elections -- his parents had crossed into Pakistan Occupied Kashmir during the war in 1965. "My village is barely 10 kilometres from the border. In the confusion during the war, my family crossed into POK. When the ceasefire was announced, they were not able to come back. My father always wanted to come back and he kept trying. Finally, in 1983, we were able to get an entry back into the country,'' claimed Mr. Rahat. However, according to the protesters, when they came back to their village, the family discovered that their land and house had been taken over by others.
