No power cut this year, says KSEB Chairman

By Our Staff Reporter

GURUVAYUR, FEB. 22. Water levels in the power generating reservoirs of the State are sufficient to generate adequate quantity of power, hence there was no need for power cut this year, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) chairman, T.M. Manoharan, said here today.

Mr. Manoharan, who was here to take part in the inauguration of the 110-kv sub-station here today, told The Hindu that with the present water levels in the reservoir it will be possible to generate 1870 million units (MUs) of power.

"The present consumption is between 14 and 16 MUs per day and this meant that we would have no shortage till May 31, even after leaving the reserve storage of water to generate 400 MUs. Also, we are expecting some occasional showers in April and May," the KSEB Chairman said. In the present power mix of the State, 48 per cent is hydel power and 52 per cent is thermal which is drawn from the Central pool. The State is not relying on the power supply from Kayamkulam thermal power station now.

Mr. Manoharan said the Board was not contemplating any hike in power tariff at present. No final decision has been taken on the proposal for the bifurcation of the KSEB.

Power station

According to KSEB officials, the Guruvayur sub-station is the 17th one among the 22 sub-stations that were to be inaugurated as part of the 100-day action plan of the Government led by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy.

The Board officials said that Guruvayur, which is one the major pilgrim centres of South India, is now developing in terms of commercial activities as well. The Board has set up the 110 KV sub-station anticipating this town's future power requirements. The sub-station is expected to benefit about 40,000 consumers in the areas such as Chavakkad, Vadakkekakd Beach, Punnayurkkulam, Guruvayur, and Pavaratty as well as the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple.

The Gurvayur MLA, P.K.K. Bava, inaugurated the power station. C.K. Chandrappan, MP, delivered the keynote address.

The 33-kv sub-station at Chavakkad was also inaugurated today.
