Fined Rs. 250 for no fault of hers

By S. Vydhianathan

CHENNAI, FEB. 22. Be warned: if you buy a train ticket at any of the counters in suburban stations in the city, check the date. For it could be a previous day's ticket. And, if any of the ticket-checking staff catches you, you will have to cough up Rs. 250 as fine for no fault of yours.

This is what happened to a hapless student commuter on Monday: She was on her way to Guindy after purchasing a ticket at Tambaram. At Guindy, when the ticket collector checked her ticket, he found it to be an "invalid ticket," as it carried the previous day's date (February 20). Despite her pleas that it was not her fault, the ticket collector took her to the stationmaster's room where she was detained.

When the commuter requested the stationmaster and the ticket collector to check with the Tambaram stationmaster by giving the ticket details, they bluntly refused, saying it was not their job.

They insisted that she pay the fine or else she would be detained further at the station . The commuter managed to get the amount fromher friends.

Apologised

But the commuter did not want to leave the matter there. On her return to Tambaram, she reported the matter to the Tambaram stationmaster, who checked it with the ticket issuing authority.

He was flabbergasted to find that the issuing authority had failed to change the date in the machine in the morning and had issued tickets dated February 20.

The stationmaster apologised for the mistake of the ticket issuing authority and asked her to give a written complaint. He also assured her of a full refund of the fine amount.

When contacted, railway authorities here said they were investigating the incident.

They would be trying to find out whether it was an inadvertent slip or just the tip of a fake ticket racket, they added.
