Chennai. Feb. 22. The gang involved in the fake driving licence racket in the city had also produced a variety of fake tax tokens and fitness certificates, police said here today. C. Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police, North, said investigations had revealed that the gang had also produced road tax, green tax and life tax tokens besides fitness certificates. They required only a prototype of an official seal and sheets for printing them, he said. The police have seized photographs of 1,500 people, who approached the gang for getting licences and transport related documents. They were not able to ascertain the exact number of tokens and certificates issued by the gang. The gang could have issued a substantial number of these tokens, Mr. Babu said.
1,500 fake licences
In the last one and a half years, the gang had issued more than 1,500 licences. The police have specific information that the holograms in the licences were sourced from a person in New Delhi. A special party headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police will soon leave for Delhi as part of the investigation. S.N. Seshasai, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Flower Bazaar, said police were consulting Transport Department officials to trace those who had received the fake licences from the gang. It may be recalled that the police arrested the gang after a decoy approached a teashop owner earlier last week to get a driving licence. The licence was arranged in two days. Following this, the teashop owner was arrested and questioned, leading to the arrest of the gang.
