Funds for Namadhu Gramam

MADURAI, FEB.22. The district administration has received Rs.2.66 crores, including a direct financial assistance of Rs.1.61 crores, from the State Government for implementing the Namadhu Gramam scheme this year, according to the Collector, D. Raajendiran.

Talking to reporters here today, Mr. Raajendiran said the scheme would be implemented in all 431 villages panchayats. Apart from direct funding, the administration had received Rs.1.05 crores out of the MLA Local Area Development Fund. Proposals for taking up 680 different works through the village development councils had been submitted to the district panel for approval and the amount would be sanctioned after endorsement, the Collector added.

The administration had also obtained funds amounting to Rs.2.57 crores and 5000 tonnes of rice worth Rs.5.4 crores for executing the second phase of drought relief works. This would facilitate generation of additional employment in rural areas, particularly landless poor agricultural labourers, carrying out various development works such as laying roads, desilting tanks and ponds, etc., through the Public Works Department, Rural Development Agency, Forest Department, and Agricultural Engineering Department.

The works would be executed under the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana.

A total of 8667 Adi Dravidar girl students would be given free bicycles by March-end. Meanwhile, the administration had disbursed a solatium of Rs. one lakh each to the kin of 29 tsunami victims and the relief would be given away to the kin of 26 more victims.

The District Rural Development Agency had taken up 6692 development works during 2004 - 05 on an outlay of Rs.54.37 crores, Mr. Raajendiran said.

Of them, 4441 works were completed and 2251others under various stages of progress. During 2003 - 04, the DRDA spent Rs.73.42 crores and completed 6910 works and achieved cent percent success in completing the selected chores.

Free medical camps

Free medical camps would be conducted between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for residents of villages falling under the Primary Health Centres at Karungalalkudi (February 24), Alanganallur (February 26), Chellampatti (February 28), Katchakatti (March 3), Kallandiri (March 5), Ezhumalai (March 7), T. Kallupatti (March 10), Vellalur (March 14), Samayanallur (March 17), Kalligudi (March 19), Tirupparankundram (March 21) and Thottappanayakkanur (March 24).
