Remove summer `pandals' Sir, The city looks fresh now with the removal of encroachments. However, the eviction drive appears to be partial in some areas, owing to humanitarian considerations. I request officials to be stringent in this regard. The authorities should keep a tab on summer `pandals.' Later, these `pandals' are made permanent with concrete structures. Moreover, the court should put an end to the loudspeaker menace. Loudspeakers start blaring in the wee hours from places of worship. This creates a lot of disturbance to students, especially those preparing for examinations. Many studies have proved that noise pollution is responsible for stress-related disorders. Will the authorities concerned look into this? V. Nagaraajan, Madurai. II
Sir, I appreciate officials for their fearless move to evict encroachments. One is happy that even places of worship have not been spared. For once, the officials have displayed exemplary courage in discharging their duty and shown that in the matters of executing an order, religion would not matter. This is a welcome development. It is unfortunate that a religious head, instead of appreciating the officials and giving a helping hand to them in doing their duty impartially, thought it fit to criticise them for having demolished a place of worship. In the eviction drive, places of worship belonging to all religions have been removed. So, there is no question of one religion being singled out and targeted. D. Samuel Lawrence, Madurai. Gift cheques Sir, With a view to presenting a Gift Cheque for Rs.500 to one of my friends on the occasion of his marriage, I approached the State Bank of India, Madurai Main Branch, and a couple of its branches, in vain. Nowhere the bank has the facility and my enquiries revealed that the system had been withdrawn long ago. A couple of other nationalised banks gave the same reply. A Gift Cheque is to convey one's love and affection towards to one's near and dear on a momentous occasion. This apart, the recipient of the Gift Cheque will cherish in his/her heart the pleasant memories of the banker concerned, at least, for sometime to come. The banks doing this service may not momentarily earn much; but can a nationalised bank with its avowed social objectives deny this service to its customers, especially in the present context of banks vying with each other to woo customers to their fold. K. Muthiah, Madurai. Tackling robbery Sir, This has reference to the write up "Back to locked house register" in The Hindu , February 12. In locked houses, robbers upon entry target the almirah for valuables. Hence, they can be placed somewhere, which are difficult to locate. The valuables can also be kept in bank lockers. Householders' all risk policy from insurance companies covers the entire valuables against fire and burglary and the policy has to be popularised. Properly functioning residents' welfare associations play a significant role in preventing the crimes in that area. Regular informative notice board kept in a prime locality of the colony and the presence of a watchman will give a warning signal to the offenders and they may not intend to take a risk. T. Srinivasa Rengan, Madurai. Traffic regulation Sir, Traffic is heavy in the junction of SS Colony entrance, Harvey Nagar Road and Arasaradi throughout the day. Pedestrians are suffering a lot to cross the road. The setting up of a police umbrella and marking of the pedestrian cross are a must. Will the authorities do the needful? M.S. Raghavan, Madurai. Special trains Sir, The Southern Railway is operating special trains, almost regularly, from Chennai to Nagercoil to clear extra rush. There is always a demand for berths in the Tuticorin-Mysore Express. So, if the authorities arrange for such special trains between these two stations at least twice a week or until an additional train is introduced, it will be a boon to thousands of passengers. K.R. Rajendran, Madurai. Platform extension Sir, The Koodal Nagar Railway Station, a peripheral of the Madurai Junction, is slated for elevation to the status of Mambalam or Tambaram in Chennai. According to reports available, certain vital passenger amenities have been planned. It will be appreciated if care is taken to bring the station premises to the proximity of the nearby residential colonies to the extent possible; a feasible suggestion is that the platforms of the station proposed for extension can be done towards the Samayanallur station side as the signals and points can be easily shifted from the present location towards that side, with the present obstacle of level crossing gate disappearing from the scene with the construction of the roadover bridge. K. Muthiah, Madurai. Stray dog menace Sir, Stray dog menace exists not only at Meenakshi Nagar of P&T Colony but also in the Indian Bank Colony (Narayanapuram). Unwary pedestrians and school going children often become panic when stray dogs snarl at them. Hence, it is imperative that the local bodies concerned tackle the problem at once. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai.
