Visakhapatnam
A park shorn of greenery greets people at the Convent Junction in Visakhapatnam. Photo: K.R. Deepak
VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 22. A moment of happiness for the city-dweller hurrying along or waiting for the traffic light to change is the greenery being developed by the Municipal Corporation. Several traffic intersections have islands meant for greenery. But they seem to be falling on bad days with maintenance leaving much to be desired. Also, sometimes priorities keep changing though officials admit that the maintenance of greenery on thoroughfares can be done with minimum expenditure.
But even that is apparently not being allotted to the greenery at the Convent Junction or the one near Chavulamadum.
The area does not seem to be congenial for development of greenery. At the island near Chavulmadum, the grill was stolen and people sleep in the enclosure trampling on the plants and greenery and `anti-social' activities also take place. They cite the example of MVP Colony where, thanks to responsive residents the greenery has grown well and is being maintained well, too.
The two islands near Convent Junction are being maintained by the Port Trust for long and seem to be getting a raw deal, if their appearance is any indication.
Voluntary aid needed
It is suggested that because of the problems specific to the area, a voluntary organisation should come forward and take up the maintenance of the island near Chavulamadum.
