INS Chatak to be converted into museum soon

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 22. The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will sign an agreement with the Indian Navy within a week on converting INS Chatak, a decommissioned warship, into a museum, it is learnt.

Verification

The draft of the agreement, along with the one to be signed with the contractor short-listed for installing the ship at its site in Marine Drive, has been sent for legal verification. INS Chatak was part of the fleet of missile boats that participated in the 1971 War.

The contractor K.H. Latheef was waiting for the consent from the Navy to tow the ship to the plot and fix it. It will take only a month to set up the ship properly. There will be a counter for the Navy, which is the only construction to be made at the site, said Mr. Latheef.

The authority hopes to launch the museum by the end of May. "We will have a gala opening ceremony. We are trying to bring sailors who have served on this ship during the War," said Antony Isaac, chairman, GCDA.

The authority has allotted 20 cents of land near the market canal at Marine Drive on lease for 15 years. The authority will get a monthly rent of Rs.10,000 from the project. "The land cannot be used for the purpose of any other construction. In this way, we can utilise that plot effectively. Once the agreement is signed, we can set up the museum in 60 days," said Prof. Isaac. About 500 metres of land needs to be dredged to tow the ship to the plot.

Proposal forwarded

Even as the authority and the contractor are fine-tuning their plans for the museum, the Navy officials refused to commit any time-frame regarding the project. The proposal has been forwarded to the Ministry of Defence and the clearance is yet to be obtained, said the Navy sources.

The museum will be set up by the GCDA itself, though the Navy is willing to provide guidance for it, he added.
