NEW DELHI, FEB. 22. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest today against commercialisation of education and the increasing number of suicide cases among students, with hundreds of its student members marching to the Parliament in support of their demand for a Central legislation to check private universities. The march witnessed the participation of students from Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh. Accusing the Human Resource and Development Minister of creating confusion regarding the introduction of such a legislation, ABVP National General Secretary, K.N.Raghunandan, demanded the immediate tabling of the Central legislation and also the setting up of a fee regulatory authority to check the fee structure in education of professional courses. Threatening to go on a nation wide movement if the Government fails to take immediate action, the ABVP While pointing out that there has been a phenomenal expansion of self-financing educational institution over the last decade, the ABVP also added that instead of a common fee structure, there should be a differential one based on the grading of universities and the paying ability of students. Another demand of the ABVP has been a common entrance test at the state level that could act as a single window for admissions. For fixing the fee structure, the ABVP has proposed grading of universities to suit the quality of education provided by the institute,'' he said.
