By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 22. A 32-year-old, who allegedly cheated several people in Bangalore, Lucknow and Delhi, was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police at Bhikaji Cama Place here on Sunday. The police claim to have recovered a stolen Mitsubishi Lancer, a laptop and five mobile phones from his possession.

According to the police, the accused, Purushottam Pandey, disclosed that he was from Bangalore. After his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, he started working in a shop but left that job within two years and set up his own advertising agency "Good Advertising" in Bangalore.

Purushottam closed the firm in 2002 and began obtaining Government contracts through fraudulent methods. He would also get students admitted to medical colleges, and making money by helping Government officials in getting desired posts through his contacts. Not satisfied with the income, he went to Mumbai the next year and started working in Mudra advertising agency on commission basis. He worked there till March 2004 and then shifted to Lucknow where he started outdoor advertising on commission basis.

In Lucknow, Purushottam came close to a girl working in a beauty parlour and both allegedly cheated several people there and fled to Kolkata. After staying there for a while, they went to Bangalore and then to Chennai in December 2004.

In Chennai, Purushottam hired a Lancer car from one A.J.K. Travels through its owner, Krishna Murthy, who knew him. He took the Lancer to Bangalore where he asked the driver to get something for him and decamped in the car to Delhi. The couple started living in a guesthouse at Gurgaon.

This January, Purushottam came across a newspaper advertisement regarding sale of a laptop by a doctor from Pitampura. He went to the doctor's residence when the former was not there. Purushottam introduced himself as the doctor's friend and asked one of his staff members to show the laptop. He then asked for the laptop's battery. As the staff went to get the battery, Purushottam vanished from the scene.

During interrogation, Purushottam disclosed that he would borrow mobile phones from people on the pretext of making important calls and would flee with them.
