Health Minister reviews arrangements for Pongala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 22 . The Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, today reviewed the arrangements made by the Department of the Health for the Attukal Pongala festival.

The Minister directed the officials to provide drinking water to those who come for the pongala. The Kerala State Pollution Control Board has been asked to set up measure to check the quality of water. As many as 10 Food Inspectors would be deputed for this.

Four medical teams each headed by a Medical Officer have been constituted. The team will have a staff nurse, pharmacist, nursing assistant, hospital attendant and junior health inspector. Ambulance support will also be provided to the medical teams.

The Director of Health Services, B. Mahilamoni, and the Chairman of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, G. Rajmohan, the City Police Commissioner, Balram Kumar Upadhaya, the general convener of the festival committee, R. Sukumaran Nair, attended the review meeting.

First aid camp

The Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) will conduct a free first aid camp for the devotees participating in the Attukal pongala festival on Thursday.

The camp will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Ajanta Theatre premises in Pazhavangady.

Warning

Meanwhile, the Chief Electrical Inspector has urged the devotees not to set up hearths near the wooden electric posts and below the live electric lines of the KSEB, and to keep a safe distance from the transformers. The Chief Electrical Inspector has also issued guidelines to be followed while illuminating the premises for the festival.

Dry days

The District Collector has declared Wednesday and Thursday as dry days in a five- kilometre area around the Attukal Bhagawathy temple. This is on account of the Pongala festival on Thursday.
