Unique surgery on victim of freak mishap

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, FEB. 22. A team of plastic surgeons from the Pittsburgh University of Health Sciences (PUHS) in the US, along with their counterparts at the Gandhi Hospital here, reconstructed the genital of a man who had lost it in a freak mishap.

The team, led by the former head of the plastic surgery department of PUHS, Jack E. Demos, along with plastic surgeons from Gandhi Hospital led by department head, D. Mohan Krishna, had taken up Narasimha Reddy's case as part of demonstrative surgeries for a week-long workshop on plastic surgery at the hospital in Musheerabad.

Middle-aged Reddy had recently lost his genital in a freak electrical mishap and was living with artificial tubes taking care of his urinary functions.

During the five-hour surgery, muscles from his abdomen, along with pads of skin also from the abdomen, were used to reconstruct the lost organ. "The patient has recovered and the organ is fully functional," Dr. Mohan Krishna said. Reddy was not the only person who got a physical `makeover' during the workshop that concluded here on Tuesday.

Among 45 patients who were operated upon under various categories of plastic surgery were 10-year-old Sai Pratap from Kakinada who was born without a right ear.

Cartilage from his rib cage helped in constructing a new ear. Same was the case of Subbaiah who had lost his ear in an accident.

Surgeries telecast

Cases under categories of birth defects, post-burn deformities and post-trauma deformities were dealt with.

"The surgeries were also telecast live to students of plastic surgery who came from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala apart from Gandhi students," Dr. Krishna said.
