dated February 24, 1955: Colombo powers & SEATO

Sir Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, told newsmen in Calcutta on February 22 that it was not yet settled whether or not SEATO should have a permanent army. On his way to Bangkok for the first meting of the Council of SEATO, Sir Anthony halted in Calcutta for an hour. Reporters asked him if Britain would favour the idea of "teething" SEATO with a standing army. He said, "All sorts of suggestions are coming. But nothing is settled yet." Sir Anthony told a correspondent that it was for the Colombo powers to decide if they would join the SEATO. He was asked what steps SEATO or Britain could take so that the remaining Colombo powers join SEATO. The British Foreign Secretary said, "Purely none but they themselves can take any step. It was for them to decide." The only Colombo power which has joined SEATO is Pakistan.
