Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article, "Forget Shanghai, remember Mumbai" (Feb. 21) succinctly points out how subtly governments change policies to benefit the rich and the powerful even as they speak in the name of the poor. They invariably ignore the needs of housing and transport for the poor in their zeal to build luxury apartments. This is true not only of Mumbai but almost every other town and city.
V.T. Joshi,
Sir, Besides golf courses and modern residential colonies, Mumbai needs many more important utilities. Proper, affordable hospitals, schools, and public transport for instance. It is time the Government got its priorities right.
Aditya Parolia,
Sir, Mumbai's boundaries can be stretched using wastelands outside the existing suburbs. Factories and mills can be located in the extended suburbs without interfering with existing structures. While we envisage a world-class city, we should also not forget the plight of thousands of hapless slum dwellers who have been eking out a living by whatever useful jobs they can do in their meagre, appalling surroundings.
K.J. Mathew,
