BJP-backed nominees head many district panchayats

BHOPAL, FEB. 23. A majority of the district panchayats in Madhya Pradesh will now be headed by those who have contested the elections with the support of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The district panchayat elections were held today in all Madhya Pradesh districts except Dhar where the election process was suspended due to prohibitory orders imposed yesterday following a group clash over a minor incident. After a district panchayat member from Nohota had snatched away the forms being taken for scrutiny and torn them into shreds this afternoon, the Damoh district panchayat election was also suspended under the Madhya Pradesh Panchayat Adhyaksh-Upadhyaksha Nirvachan Niyam rules.

Of the 44 results available here this evening, 25 district panchayat chairmen's posts have gone in favour of candidates backed by the BJP. It is learnt that the BJP supported candidates have won the district panchayat chairman's election in Morena, Bhind, Gwalior, Guna, Ashoknagar, Datia, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ujjain, Badwani, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Raisen, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Betul, Harda, Sagar, Chhindwara, Narasinghpur, Mandla, Dindori, Balaghat, Shahdol and Anuppur. The Congress-supported candidates have won in Bhopal, Dewas, Shajapur, Hoshangabad, Katni, Seoni and Umaria.

Significantly these elections were not contested on party lines. The BJP-supported candidates who have been elected are: Madanlal Rathod (Chairman of the Mandsaur district panchayat), Dhanno Bai, (Gwalior), Sanjeev Kushwaha (Bhind), Anita Bai, (Sehore),Raghuvir Singh Raghuvanshi (Vidisha), Prabhakar Melve(Raisen), Dinesh Sharma (Shahdol) and Rekha( Balaghat) . BJP's Jaishree Patil has been declared elected as Chairperson of the Burhanpur district panchayat and Madanlal Rathod has been elected Chairman of the Mandsaur district panchayat. The Congress-supported candidate, Chetan Patidar, has been elected Chairman of the Bhopal district panchayat, while another Congress-supported candidate, P.K. Lal, has been elected unopposed as the Chairman of the Shajapur district panchayat. The Seoni district panchayat election has been won by the Congress-supported candidate, Priti Thakur, and the Umaria district panchayat Chairman's post has gone to Ajay Singh.
