Jammu & Kashmir
JAMMU, FEB 23. Both the Houses of the state legislature were adjourned today after the Opposition National Conference (NC) legislators disrupted proceedings, demanding a discussion on the delay in rescue operations that led to loss of lives in avalanches and heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. Pandemonium reigned in the two houses for more than an hour and during this time, NC and CPI (M) legislators came down heavily on the government, alleging that it had no right to stay in power as it had failed to perform its duty of saving the lives of the people in avalanches and unprecedented snowfall. They alleged that the government had failed to handle the situation efficiently. As the Lower House began at 9-30 am, NC moved an adjournment motion. However, when Speaker Tara Chand rejected it, they started raising anti-government slogans and walked into the well after protesting for over 15 minutes near the front row. Later. the Speaker adjourned the House for 30 minutes. And, when the Speaker restarted proceedings at 10-35 am, the NC MLAs again gathered in the well and held a strong demonstration, asking the Speaker to first have a discussion on the reasons that had led to the loss of so many lives in the state. When Tara Chand said the discussion on the issue would be taken up tomorrow after the Question Hour as it was a human issue and the government was concerned about it, NC MLA and leader of the Opposition, A.R. Rather, said his party would not allow the House to function till the discussion was held. The Speaker said AICC president Sonia Gandhi was today going to Srinagar where Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma had already reached to apprise her of the situation in the state after the series of avalanches and snowfall. When there was no let up in the noise, the Speaker adjourned the House for a day. The Council was also adjourned by Chairman Abdul Rashid Dar after NC MLAs protested in the well over the issue. -- UNI
