DGP directed to probe encounters
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD,
FEB. 23.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Director General of Police to investigate the killing of 14 Maoists in encounters last month and report the action taken and final outcome to the commission within six weeks.
In its order to the DGP on February 3, the commission annexed a letter of Jaya Vindhyala, general secretary, State unit of the People's Union of Civil Liberties, in which she complained of terror unleashed by police in the form of encounters.
She referred to the death of 14 Maoists in encounters up to January 24 since the breakdown of talks with the Government.
Ms. Vindhyala appealed to the NHRC to ask the Government to resume talks with the Maoists.
Otherwise, there could be a heavy loss of life in villages.
