BJP study team for Anantapur

HYDERABAD: The State Bharatiya Janata Party president, N. Indrasena Reddy, has deputed a two-member fact-finding committee to go into the alleged attempts by some missionaries to convert poor people from Anantapur taking advantage of the drought.

S.V. Seshagiri Rao, vice-president of the party, said in a press release on Wednesday that the committee, comprising K. Naresh, general secretary, and S. Ramachander, an advocate, left for Anantapur on Tuesday. They would tour the Dharmavaram area today also. The release said the party condemned the "conversion" attempts.

Suicide bid near collectorate

NELLORE: A man who attempted suicide in the Collectorate compound on Wednesday was rushed to the Government Headquarters Hospital, where he was given emergency treatment and kept under observation.

According to the RDO, D. Venkataramana Reddy, who went to the hospital on hearing about the incident, one Ch. Thirupalu (45) of Pallepadu village of Indukurpet mandal consumed pesticides on the ground that a petition was submitted against him to the police accusing him of stealing some pipes belonging to one Seenaiah of the same village. Some staff members of the collectorate saw him consuming the pesticide and immediately took him to the hospital, the RDO said.

Life term for 7 Congressmen

CUDDAPAH: The Proddatur II Additional Sessions Judge, Sahadevudu, on Wednesday sentenced seven Congressmen to life imprisonment and acquitted four others in a double murder case in Chinnapasupula village in Peddamudiyam mandal in 1998.

Those sentenced were -- Lakshmikonda Reddy, Srinivasulu Reddy, Sanjeevarayudu, Chinna Imam Hussain, Shaik Moulali, Srinivasulu Reddy, and Chenna Reddy. The four acquitted Congressmen were Venkatarami Reddy, Ramamohana Reddy, Ramachandra Reddy and Ramchenna Pasupula. The Peddamudiyam police charged the 11 persons with hacking to death of two TDP activists -- Adideva Reddy (48) and Ramachandra Reddy (42) -- in an RTC bus.

EPF: Centre's move flayed

NIZAMABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Beedi Workers' Union has condemned the Union Government's reported decision to invest the Employees Provident Fund in the share market and other institutions and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the same.

The union president, D.V. Krishna Reddy, on Wednesday, described the decision as very unfortunate and detrimental to the interests of the workers. He said an international consultant, Messrs Human Resources Consulting Organisation, was also said to have been appointed to give guidance to implement the decision.

Hospital chief manhandled

ELURU: An angry mob reportedly manhandled the Superintendent of Government Hospital Superintendent, K. Raja Rao, at Chintalapudi in West Godavari district to protest against the alleged dereliction of duties by doctors in attending an emergency case.

According to the police, Tummalapalli Mallikarjuna Rao from Naravarigudem in Ashwaraopet mandal of Khammam district was brought to the hospital on Tuesday night with severe injuries sustained in a road accident. But the hospital staff allegedly failed to pay immediate attention on the patient.

A case was registered against two persons--Vinnakota Babu Rao and Karredla Subba Rao of Chintalapudi--on the charge of subjecting a public servant to assault and intimidation.

Refresher course on IT

HYDERABAD: A three-week refresher course on `Information Technology in Agriculture', organised to empower scientists with knowledge and skills in the use of the Internet and other information technologies that can be used in agricultural education, research and technology transfer, concluded here on Wednesday.

The course, conducted at the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Rajendranagar, had senior scientists from Indian Council of Agricultural Research institutes and faculty members of Agricultural universities from across the country as participants.

Cycle rally for peace talks

HYDERABAD: Activists of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, MIM and other organisations took out a cycle rally from Achampet in Mahabubnagar district to the Assembly urging the Government to continue the peace talks with Maoists.

The rallyists left Achampet on February 21 and cycled their way to the State capital to meet the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy.

Led by the MIM Achampet unit president, M. A. Khadeer, the TRS Achampet SC cell president, G. Krishna, and the minority cell secretary, Ahmed Patel, the rallyists met the Chief Minister, the Home Minister and the MIM MP, Assaduddin Owaisi, and submitted separate memorandums. They said that once the peace process was continued it would be easy for the Government to take up construction of the irrigation projects and ground welfare schemes.

National seminar on simulators

HYDERABAD: A national seminar on the use of simulators in Defence forces will be organised on February 25 by the Simulator Development Division (SDD) on behalf of the Army Training Command, Simla, at the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) here.

The seminar, aimed at achieving greater co-operation between the Industry and Defence organisations in the field of simulators and related technologies, will have experts, users, research and development institutions, academia, vendors from the public and private sectors, representative of the Army, Navy and the Air Force sharing their views and experience.

An exhibition on state of art simulators will also be organised during the seminar to take stock of the developments in the R&D, educational and industrial establishments, an official release said.

New ST employees' body chief

HYDERABAD: K. Ranga Rao has been unanimously elected chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Tribes Employees' Association. Other office-bearers are: E. Anjaneyulu (president), P.V. Ramana (general secretary) and P. Siva Prasada Rao (treasurer).

Eight vice-presidents, nine joint secretaries and eight organising secretaries have also been elected, according to a press release issued here on Wednesday.

SVU council

TIRUPATI: The State Government has announced the new body for the executive council of Sri Venkateswara University.

According to a fax message received by the university on Wednesday evening, members of the new council are Ratnaiah, professor, SVU sociology department, N. C. Eswar Reddy, principal, SVU College of Engineering, Y. Venkatrama Reddy, associate professor of geology, B. Krishnamurthy, principal, VRS degree college, Veerapunayunipalle (Cuddapah district), M.Subbulakshmi, reader, SV Arts College, I. Gopal Reddy, former vice-chancellor, JNTU, D. Gopalakrishna Murthy, former principal of V.R.College, Nellore, V.Abdul Khader, poet/critic, and T.V.Muralinatha Reddy.

Teacher suspended

KURNOOL: The Telugu Pundit at Zilla Parishad school at Ramallkota in Kurnool district who was identified as Veeranna, was placed under suspension following allegation of sexual assault on a male student. A case was registered against him.

Brahmotsavam

CUDDAPAH: The third Brahmotsavams of Sri Vijayadurga temple began on a grand scale here on Wednesday.

Sri Swarupanandendra Swamy of Sarada Peetham launched the Brahmotsavams by hoisting `Simhadwajam'. The presiding deity was specially decorated and priests performed a special pooja called trishula pooja, Bherithadanam and installed kalasam in the yagasala.

The chief priest of the temple, Ananda Sarma, recited Vedic hymns and performed special pooja. The industrialist, Sudha Mallikarjuna Rao, who built the temple, offered special pooja with his family members.

Young genius

award

ANANTAPUR: Master C. Lathik, a sixth class student of Tiny Tots English medium school here, has been chosen for the "Sir C.V. Raman Young Genius Award-2005'' given by the Vishwabharathy Foundation, Hyderabad. He was chosen for the award from the 12th State-level talent search examination held on February 13. He stood first in the test for sixth class students. He will be presented the award at a function organised at Telugu Lalithakala Thoranam at Hyderabad on February 27.

Dharna staged

CUDDAPAH: The Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham employees' wing members staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Wednesday.

Its general secretary, L. Jitendra, demanded arrest of a Telugu Desam Party leader of Obulavaripalle in a case booked under SC/ST Act against him for allegedly abusing the MPDO, Venkatarathnam, and locking up the office two days ago.

Palle mandal) and, under the SC category, atRhavetivaripalle (Nimanapalle mandal) and Bharinepalle and Ganganadoddi villages (Vayalpad mandal).

Those interested can send their applications to mandal revenue officers before March 3.
