TIRUPATI. Feb 23. The war of wits between the Congress MLA and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Municipal Chairperson ended here on Wednesday with the suspension of the Municipal manager, Ammaiah. The feud between the MLA, M. Venkatramana, and the Chairperson, K. Sankar Reddy, was over the conduct of auction for the newly-built municipal shopping complex. While the MLA insisted that the auction be suspended to facilitate the shifting of the municipal dispensary into the complex, the municipal chairperson questioned the wisdom and propriety of housing the hospital in the commercial complex and insisted that the auction be completed as scheduled on February 7.
Chairman's attempts
The Chairperson's attempts to put it across to the MLA that the dispensary could be reconstructed in the same place where it existed now under the Urban Health Centre programme as already agreed upon in principle by the Government of India did not yield any result. With the Chairperson obviously finding that the municipality was needlessly losing rent on the shopping complex because of the MLA's stand he got the municipality to notify the auction date as February 7. But the Chairman's attempts failed with the MLA reportedly using his influence with the Director of Municipal Administration office in Hyderabad. But notwithstanding the orders, the Chairperson got the auction conducted on the date scheduled with the help of the manager who was caught in a piquant situation. It was on this ground that the Director of Municipal Administration has issued orders suspending the Municipal Manager with immediate effect.
