Call for restoration of democracy in Nepal

NEW DELHI FEB. 23. A public meeting organised by Jan Hastakshep on the topic "Nepal: Monarchy versus Democracy and role of the Indian Government'' here on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution calling for restoration of democracy in the Himalayan Kingdom.

The meeting was attended by the former MP, Surendra Mohan; former Delhi University Professor, Manoranjan Mohanty; poet Pankaj Singh; Nepali Congress member, Shekhar Koirala; and the national president of the Nepal Jan Adhikar Suraksha Samiti, Laxman Pant

Mr. Mohan called for adopting measures to pressurise King Gyanendra to restore democracy and expressed his support for the struggle to establish genuine democracy in Nepal.

Japan Bank official visits Metro

NEW DELHI FEB. 23. The Managing Director and Deputy Governor of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Tokyo, Koji Tanami, today travelled on the Delhi Metro from Kashmere Gate to Vishwavidyalaya (Delhi University) station.

The Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, E. Sreedharan, who accompanied Mr Tanami emphasised that the Delhi Metro is the most visible symbol of Indo-Japanese cooperation in the city of Delhi and thanked JBIC for the loan extended for the Phase I of Delhi Metro Project, currently under implementation. The two also discussed various programmes, including an AIDS awareness programme, which has been launched with the cooperation of JBIC.

Research seminar

NEW DELHI FEB. 23. The Indian Council of Historical Research is organising a three-day seminar on "Agriculture in South Asia's History: Issues and Paradigms'' here from this coming Friday. It will be inaugurated by the former University Grants Commission chairman, Satish Chandra, and the keynote address will be delivered by eminent historian Irfan Habib. About 40 research papers on the themes origins and consequences of agriculture, agriculture and water management, livestock and wildlife, and researches in agriculture and its impact, would be discussed.

Cambridge alumni visit school

NEW DELHI FEB. 23. A delegation of 17 alumni from the Girton College, Cambridge University, visited The Indian School here earlier this week to establish a network of Girtonians across India. Among the distinguished visitors was Carol Darwin, wife of the great grandson of Charles Darwin, who propounded the theory of evolution. The Indian School vice-chairperson, Nayana Goradia, who is herself a Girtonian, welcomed the guests.

In the Capital, the group will also visit Delhi University's South Campus and the National Museum.

Annual Day celebrated

NEW DELHI FEB. 23. The Darshan Academy, Kirpal Bagh, celebrated its Eighth Annual Day earlier this week. On the occasion, the president of the World Council of Religion, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, was the chief guest. The function started with a prayer and welcome song presented by the students. The annual magazine of the school "Darshanika 2005'' was also released on the occasion. The students later presented a cultural programme to mark the occasion.
