CHENNAI, FEB. 23. Over 540 bags of rice procured from ration cardholders under the PDS system were seized by the Peravallur police on Tuesday. Six persons have been arrested. R. Samuthrapandi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pulianthope, said that around 10.30 p.m. a special party saw rice bags being loaded on to a mini-lorry in GKM Colony in Peravallur police limits. On suspicion, they interrogated the persons loading the bags, who told them that they were taking the bags to a godown in Otteri.
Six arrested
Police found out that the rice was procured from the public distribution system through ration cardholders. At the godown in Otteri, police found 500 bags of PDS rice. They arrested two persons, Jayaraj and Sakthivel, who had purchased the rice from ration cardholders. After procuring a sizeable quantity, they packed 60 kg of rice in each gunny bag and sold them to various grocery shops in the city. At the godown in Otteri, police arrested Balakrishnan, manager of the godown, Selvam of Kosapettai, Otteri, Arumugam his helper, Senthil of Vyasarpadi, who transported rice bags in his autorickshaw. They seized the van and autorickshaw used by them. However, the proprietors of the godown, Damodharan and Singaram, were absconding. Police have spread a dragnet for them. A case has been filed under Sections 4 (1), 19 (1) of the Tamil Nadu Essential Trade Act and under 7 (1) a (ii) Essential Commodities Act against the offenders, police said.
