Alternative habitats for tsunami-hit people

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, FEB.23. The tsunami-affected people in 17 panchayats falling under the Sirkazhi, Nagapattinam and Karaikal areas in the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu will soon have alternative habitats that aim at minimising a threat from tsunami attack in the future.

These habitats will be provided under a joint project by the Hunger Project, CARE, an international agency, and the Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed University), the Vice Chancellor of the Gandhigram Rural Institute, T. Karunakaran, has said.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, he said coastal villages in these panchayats would be formed into clusters of five or six villages to facilitate regional development.

The promoters were quite aware that parameters such as the coastal zone regulation were no barrier in containing the tsunami disaster but it was the elevation that mattered the most, he added.
