BANGALORE, FEB. 23. Several applicants for sites at Arkavathi Layout heaved a sigh of relief after the Bangalore Development Authority decided to return the deposit of those who have not been short-listed for allotment of sites. Over 2.5 lakh people applied for 20,000 sites and the BDA had collected Rs. 930 crores as initial deposit from applicants. "I did not like the idea of the BDA keeping my money locked up for so long. I could have used it by now," said A. Ramanan of Jakkur hobli. Some applicants had pawned their jewellery and taken loans to pay the initial deposit for the site. "I have lost so much by way of interest over the last few months. It has been really difficult for me financially," said Savitri Pillai, another applicant. Arkavathi Layout is being developed over an extent of 2,750 acres in 16 villages coming under Yelahanka and K.R. Puram hoblis of Bangalore North taluk and Bangalore East taluk. Allotment of sites was to be announced in the middle of January, but it got postponed because of several cases pending in the High Court challenging various aspects of the formation of the layout and the compensation amount. The BDA has so far not said anything on the formal allotment of sites. Those applicants who do not get their deposit back by speed post before March 15 can only hope that they have been allotted a site.
