Education-related software developed

THE CITY-based VAPS Technosoft has produced a software called `Campus Resource Management' featuring over 20 modules on different aspects of administration of education, including department-wise controls, admissions tests, details of students and academic and non-academic achievements.

The examination module, for instance, has details about student and teacher performance, subject analysis and progress. The hostel module has information about the number of students, vacancy position, mess bill generation dividing system, mess bill payment and dues.

Parents need not approach either the class teacher or the principal. The module on parents will give in detail all that they should know about their wards. They should insert a smart card or type the pin number in the computer to get details of the academic achievement, progress in co-curricular activities and personality development of their children. For more on this software, visit www.vapstech.com or email: vapstechno@vnsl.net.

THE M.TECH (Geoinformatics) programme, offered jointly by the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Application Centre (KSRSAC), Survey of India and the Visvesvaraya Technological University, is a two-year, two-semester course open to engineering graduates from Civil, Environmental, Transportation and Architecture streams.

Admission to the programme is based on a written test conducted by VTU, generally in the month of August. The course features topics such as Geographical Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing, Cartography, Computational Artificial Intelligence, Spatial Data Analysis and modelling and Data Management System. Regular examinations and seminars are conducted as part of the course to assess the involvement and progress of the students. "After possessing a sound knowledge of the fundamentals, the intensive period of project work and industrial training give each student a strong foothold in the entire domain of Geoinformatics," explains a VTU official.

The faculty for the course include professional experts drawn from VTU, KSRAC, Survey of India, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and NIT, Suratkal.

For starters, Geoinformatics is a science, which not only develops but also makes use of information science to address the problems of geosciences and other related branches of engineering.

It also integrates the elements of various disciplines dealing with information created by manipulating geographic (spatial) data in a computerised system or geodata. The main focus of Geoinformatics lies on development and management of databases of geodata; analysis and modelling of geodata; and development and integration of computer tools for incorporating these aspects.

Job opportunities for this course are in private and public sector companies; municipal administration departments such as town planning, watershed and mining; and in entrepreneurship development leading to consultancy.
