BITSAT to be held at three centres in State

By R. Ravikanth Reddy

HYDERABAD, FEB. 23. The much-awaited Birla Institute of Technology & Science Admission Test (BITSAT)-2005 would be conducted in three centres in the State - Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Vishakapatnam--and 11 others across the country.

"There will be only one centre in each of these cities named as BITSAT centre where students can take the test from April 10 to June 20 after registering online," G. Raghurama, Dean, Admissions and Placement, BITS Pilani, told The Hindu on Wednesday. Students have to reserve the test date and time before 5 p.m. on March 5.

The reservations will be made on first-come-first-serve-basis.

The institute will assign the test centre, date and time to the students at its discretion if they fail to register on time and any claim for changes will not be entertained. If the students cannot register online due to any technical problems, they can contact BITS officials. Though the marks obtained by the candidates would be given immediately, their position in the merit list will be available only when the final list is displayed.

Prof. Raghurama said more than 57,000 students from across the country have registered for the BITSAT-2005 after the last date for registration ended on January 31.

However, the available seats are around 1,400 in both Pilani and Goa campuses. Though exact numbers are not available, students from the State are apparently the maximum.

He said the actual location of the test would be sent to the students along with hall-tickets, which would be sent to every student by the end of March.

The test, to be conducted from April 10 to June 20, 2005, has latest security features. "Impersonation is ruled out as the candidates' photographs would be taken through the web cam for the record," Prof. S. Venkateswaran, Vice-Chancellor of BITS, says.

Minimum qualification

While all admissions would be based on the scores obtained by the students in the computer-based online test, the minimum qualification for admission would be a pass in the 12th standard examination with at least 80 per cent aggregate marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics subjects with at least 60 per cent in each of physics, chemistry and mathematics subjects.

Those who clear the test would have to apply for admission again separately and admissions would be based on BITSAT scores.

The process would be completed by the end of July and the classes would begin on August 1, 2005.
