Senior Congress leaders seek better coordination

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB. 23. A meeting of senior Congress leaders held at the Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters on Wednesday advised greater caution to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in implementing poll promises made by the party. Deviation from the manifesto, if necessary, should be properly evaluated before announcements were made, they felt.

Wider consultations

Wider consultations with the friendly opposition parties and senior colleagues by the Chief Minister would put to rest much of the criticism. Their reference was apparently to the flak the Government drew with regard to new excise policy and implementation of free power supply for agriculture.

Agreeing that the prioritisation of thrust areas was much better than the previous regime, they asked the PCC president, K. Keshava Rao, to seek regular interaction of the Chief Minister with the seniors to avoid "unnecessary and avoidable criticism". The leaders expressed satisfaction over the preparedness of the party in taking on the Opposition in the next municipal elections.

Free power promise was discussed at length and it was concluded that better dissemination of information on the pros and cons of the policy would have removed any misgivings about it.The leaders emphasised that promises made during the election campaign must be kept to make people see the difference in the quality of governance between the TDP and the Congress Governments.

The PCC president pacified the leaders who complained about not being taken into confidence by the Chief Minister on important policy matters.

Nedurumilli Janardhan Reddy, K. Rosaiah, Nandi Yellaiah, P. Janardhan Reddy, K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao and V. Hanumantha Rao were among those who attended the meeting.
