NEW DELHI, FEB. 23. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch has seized more files of the Income Tax Department for further probe into the refund fraud, in which a dozen people have already been arrested on charges of encashing refund drafts worth over Rs. 50 lakhs through bogus bank accounts by filing fake Income Tax returns. It is learnt that the police have detected certain cases in which the accused used scanned copy of refund drafts to submit them in the Income Tax Department in the mutilated form, seeking fresh drafts. After obtaining the `duplicate' drafts, the accused got them encashed through bogus bank accounts they had opened in UCO Bank, Central Bank of India and Union Bank of India. In almost all the cases, the accused apparently managed to collect the drafts by hand, whereas they are supposed to be sent by registered post. Hence, the police have strong suspicion that the accused took the help of some Income Tax staff members in obtain the drafts. Also, the police are probing the suspected involvement of more bank officials in the fraud.
